There are about 962 million people over the age of 60 in the world today — more than twice as many as there were in 1980. By 2050, that number will more than double again to nearly 2.1 billion. The rise in the number of older adults, together with declining birthrates, means that by the middle of this century, there will be more people over 60 than under the age of 15. In Europe alone, the European Commission has estimated that the percentage of people over 65 years old will grow from approximately 15% of the total population to approximately 30% by 2050. The number of people over 85 years old will also double over the same period.
